Let’s Get Down to Jewelry Business: 5 Tips to Help Grow Your Business
Whether you’re just starting out in the jewelry business, or you’re a seasoned jewelry artist, business growth is always a top priority. If you feel like you’ve hit a plateau with your jewelry business, these 5 simple tips can help get your business back into motion.
Embrace Change
If you’ve hit a plateau or even a slump in sales, maybe it’s time to give your business a much needed makeover. Allow your business to change direction if you think it needs to. Try changing materials, adding a new collection, or try a new target market. LeiLei Secor is the owner of DesignedbyLei, who just so happens to also be a full time college student and receiver of the National Federation of Independent Businesses’ Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award (wow!). In an interview with Entrepreneur, Secor says that she knew a change was needed when her original items weren’t selling:
“Secor joined Etsy in the summer of 2012 and tried to sell beaded macramé bracelets. When buyers failed to take notice, she took a different approach. “It didn’t sell, so I quickly changed to wire-wrap jewelry a week later,” she said. The new designs quickly caught on.”
Secor now has over 14,000 sales on her Etsy shop alone!
Love to Learn
As both a business owner and jewelry artist, knowledge is key! Keep your business and your jewelry collections feeling fresh by consistently learning new strategies, skills, and design techniques. If you don’t have the funds to invest in classes, the internet is always there and it’s free! There’s a plethora of articles out there on jewelry making, marketing, trends, and business tips. Be Fearless
Starting and owning a jewelry business is scary. Success requires boldness, hard work, risk, and confidence in yourself and your business. It may seem easier to stay comfortable where you are, but if you don’t take great leaps, your business will never grow. If you have an idea for a creative new item, bold packaging design, or different marketing technique, try it! Believe in yourself enough to know that you will be right in doing so.“Success is most often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.” - Coco Chanel
Be on the Lookout
While you shouldn’t let competitors completely influence you, it’s important to keep your eye on them to see what they’re selling and how they’re marketing themselves. Study bigger competitors that sell similar items to yours. What are they doing that you aren’t? What has caused them to grow as a business that you can learn from? Maybe it’s the way they photograph or display their items, their branding or packaging, the look of their website, or maybe they are more active on social media. Researching all of these aspects can help you stay on top of industry trends and grow as a business.
Get Social
Social media can be a great way to advertise your business and products. It can be difficult to keep up with all of your social media sites when you’re also running a business, designing new pieces, working on sales, shipping, working customer service… (really, the list goes on!), so it may be wise to pick the top three social networks that you think relate most to your target market. If you think three will be too much, focus your efforts onto at least one. Gaining a social media following is great for your business and your brand, and once established, can result in more sales.
Try and post frequently, and experiment with different techniques that will give you the results you want. Social media promotions, contests or giveaways can be a fun way to gain a following and create more “buzz” for your business. Behind-the-scenes posts can create more of a personal connection between yourself and your followers. Try posting photos of your work space, employees, or design process. Posting shareable content (photos, videos, and articles) can also be a great way for users across social media to find you.
